Steven Crowder, a student at Wayne Community College, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.

He is one of 350 students attending higher-education institutions granting two-year degrees to receive a $1,000 scholarship this year from the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program.

Recipients must have demonstrated academic success and performed 100 hours of community service within the past 12 months.

Crowder, who earned a General Educational Development diploma from WCC in 2002, will receive a both an associate in art and an associate in science/college transfer degree in spring 2005. He is currently the vice president for fellowship for the college’s chapter of the two-year college scholastic honorary organization Phi Theta Kappa, a member of the WCC Drama Club, and a math tutor in the college’s Academic Skills Center.

He plans to attend N.C. State University for a degree in engineering with the ultimate goal of becoming a nuclear engineer.

This is the fourth consecutive year that a student at Wayne Community College has received a scholarship from the Coca-Cola Foundation. That history includes two $2,000 New Century Scholars scholarships, an honor given to only one community college student in each state each year.

“The Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program gives support and encouragement to an under-served population of college students,” said J. Mark Davis, president of the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. “These fine students, who often juggle school, work and family, continue to give back to their communities through volunteer service.”

The Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program is made possible with funding from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation. The Whitehead Foundation provides grants in support of human services initiatives, particularly programs that benefit young people. The late Joseph B. Whitehead was one of the original bottlers of Coca-Cola.

The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation is supported by the financial commitment of the Eastern Carolina CCB and The Coca-Cola Company. The Foundation was created in 1986 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Coca-Cola and to establish a legacy for the education of tomorrow's leaders.

In the past five years, The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has provided more than $2 million in scholarship awards to students attending two-year degree granting institutions. It has given out more than $25 million through the Coca-Cola Scholars Program during the past 16 years.
